The Public Works Department began flushing hydrants in June and will continue into early July as weather permits. When hydrants are being flushed in your neighborhood, you may notice discoloration and rust particles in your water during the process. If you notice discoloration, letting your faucet run for a short time should clear your water lines. Wait to wash light clothing until you notice the water has cleared. Should you have any questions, please call Public Works at 952-473-6961 x4.
What's hydrant flushing?
Hydrant flushing is a release of water from fire hydrants. It's a controlled procedure that is vital to the general maintenance of Long Lake’s water distribution system.
Why do utilities flush hydrants?
Regular flushing verifies the continued maintenance and proper operation of hydrants. It also allows utilities to deliver the highest quality water possible to customers -- flushing improves water clarity, appearance, and quality by removing mineral and sediment build up from the City's watermains (water distribution pipes); and helps avoid random occurrences of rusty water in the event there's a large demand for water, such as during a substantial firefighting effort.
