Election Information

The city you live in is where you vote early.  If you use a Long Lake zip code for your mail but live in Orono or Medina, visit your home city's website or call your City Hall for your early voting location.   All residents of Hennepin County cities can also vote early at the Hennepin County Government Center (see below).

Vote Early (Absentee) at the Hennepin County Government Center - Open 46 Days Before Election Day
You can vote in person at Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street MC680, Minneapolis. In-person absentee voting at the County starts 46 days before Election Day.

Voting by mail opens 46 days before Election Day.  Click here to apply online and your early voting/absentee ballot will be sent to you by mail.  Follow the directions included with your ballot and mail it back in the ballot envelopes as instructed.  Click here to track the status of your ballot.

Vote Early at City Hall - Long Lake Residents - Open 18 Days Prior to Election Day (Limited Staff)
For the City of Long Lake, early voting in person is only available in the 18 days prior to election day. Plan to fill out an early voting application at the time of your arrival.  Please be advised that due to the steps involved in the application process, you may (and for the General Election, assume you will) encounter lines for early voting - your patience is sincerely appreciated.  As a reminder, early voting differs from voting on election day, as it is administered by City Hall staff.  Election day voting, on the other hand, is administered by a full team of Election Judges who are ready and waiting to quickly/efficiently check in voters electronically.  

Serving in the Military or Living Outside the US?
Military voters, their dependents, and other US citizens who are overseas may be eligible to vote absentee under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA).  Click here to apply online and have an absentee ballot sent to you wherever you are in the world!

Minnesota State law requires voters either pre-register to vote at least 21 days before an election day or register at the polls on election day.  Click here to register online via the Minnesota Secretary of State's website.  If you're a new voter who's never registered to vote before, if you've had a name change, changed your residence address (even just a change in apartment numbers in the same building), or not voted in elections in the last four years, you'll need to register to vote.

Eligibility to Register to Vote
You're eligible to register and vote in Hennepin County if you are at least 18 years old on election day, a US citizen, and have been a resident of Minnesota for at least 20 days before the election.  

You're NOT eligible to vote if you've been convicted of treason or any felony without having your civil rights restored; found by a court to be legally incompetent; and/or are under a guardianship in which the court order revokes the ward's right to vote.

ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION - YOU CAN REGISTER OR RE-REGISTER ON ELECTION DAY IF NEEDED, WITH PROOF OF ID
Missed the pre-registration deadline and need to register to vote on election day?  Whether registering as a new voter, or because you've had a name or address change since you last voted, Election Judges can assist you in registering on election day as long as you remember to bring your proof of ID.  

• A current Minnesota Driver's License showing your Long Lake address is the easiest proof of ID to use.  
   
• If you haven't updated your Driver's License yet, you can use either your Driver's License or a US Passport as a photo ID along with an acceptable document with a date or due date within 30 days of election day - the acceptable document MUST have your name and current Long Lake address on it.  Acceptable documents are a mortgage or rent statement; credit card or bank statement; or a phone, TV, internet, gas, electric, garbage or water/sewer bill.  Acceptable documents can be shown to the Election Judge on an electronic device. 

The following City of Long Lake offices will be on the November 3, 2026 General Election ballot:

• Mayor / 2 year term
• City Councilmember (2 seats) / 4 year terms

A candidate for these municipal offices must be a resident of the City of Long Lake, both while seeking election and for the duration of a term in office.

• July 14:  Candidate filing period opens for City offices
• July 28:  Candidate filing period for City offices closes at 5:00 pm
• July 30:  Candidate withdrawal period for City offices closes at 5:00 pm

Affidavits of candidacy must be submitted during the filing period to the City Clerk at City Hall, 450 Virginia Avenue. A $2.00 filing fee is also due at the time of filing. Filing documents that are incomplete or received after the deadline are required to be rejected. Candidates are requested to set up a filing appointment with the Long Lake City Clerk by calling 952-473-6961 x1 or emailing jmoeller [at] longlakemn.gov (jmoeller[at]longlakemn[dot]gov). 

Campaign signage may be posted beginning 46 days before the State Primary in a State General Election year and up until 10 days following the State General Election.

Interested in Learning More About Long Lake Mayor and City Council Member Candidates Before Election Day?
Each election year, the Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission (LMCC) invites candidates running for offices in the LMCC’s member cities the opportunity to come to their studio and tape a “Candidate Statement”. The segments recorded typically air on television channel 21 beginning mid-October through General Election Day in November. Additionally candidate statements will be available for viewing on the LMCC’s website at www.lmcc-tv.org beginning in mid-October.

Within the two to three weeks prior to election day, it is anticipated that as in past election years, local newspapers such as ‘The Laker Pioneer’ will also be publishing editions featuring city candidate information.
